A Serious Injury at a Wrestling Show

Last night at the Steeltown Pro Wrestling show in Selkirk, an all-around good guy Zack Mercury suffered what might go down as the worst injury at a wrestling show this province has ever seen. It will rank right up there with the November 1997 match, where Chad Ripley suffered a broken neck. Due to the gruesome details, this may be worse.

Zack Mercury was doing a highspot to the floor, and unfortunately, he ended up with a severely broken wrist, or hand (I haven't heard an update as of this morning, so I can't be precise about the injury). The injury was so bad that when Zack got back to the locker room there was blood, that apparently was coming from the hand, where skin had been broken. Kudos to Ike Idol for getting Zack to the ER very quickly after the injury.

This update came from Rob Stardom at the gathering after the show, but Zack had to be rushed to Winnipeg to get reconstructive surgery on his hand, within an hour of the show, which should tell you how serious the injury is. I fear that it will be at least a year before Zack will even think about wrestling a match, if ever, and that's a shame. More than worrying about Zack Mercury the wrestler right now, my thoughts and prayers go out to Darren the person, who will have a very difficult couple of months ahead of him.

Zack is one of the most passionate people about the business I've ever seen. Ask anyone who has debated the philosophies of wrestling with him, even if you didn't agree with him, he would stick to his opinion and argue til the bitter end, and that is reflective of his passion for this business. He always strives to keep in peek shape, and reflect the image professional wrestling should be. And I've always believed he's been a welcomed addition to any wrestling show I've ever promoted.

More than that, Darren, always proves to be a good person in this business. A prime example, takes me back to last March, when WFX Wrestling had a commitment to volunteer with the Manitoba Brain Injury Association to help bag groceries at Safeway on Saturday afternoons. It was a charitable engagement, which was to help WFX's image in the community. And I always believed Jon Cutler could be called with short notice, because he loves that kind of thing and does it so well. However, giving Jon incredibly short notice, he couldn't be available because of a work commitment. I reached Zack with 20 minutes notice, and asked if he could make it down, and like a professional, but more importantly, like the great person he is, he made it down, and was a huge hit with the MBIA, the Safeway shoppers and staff. And Shelley Melanson, lol. That's exactly the guy Zack is. If you're running a wrestling show, there is no shortage of help he can offer to make the show a success.

I know the next couple of months are going to be very difficult for Darren the person. And he might not even think about Zack Mercury the wrestling character which will tell you the severity of this situation. Because in so many ways Darren lives to perform as Zack. And I'm calling on the boys, to step up for one of their own. This is a guy who needs his fellow boys more today than ever before, and I for one, want to be one of those boys to have Darren's back.

I know Rob Stardom, TJ Bratt, and Bobby Jay will be the first three guys to step up for Darren, they are much closer to Darren than I've ever been. But I'm offering to help organize a benefit show for Darren, with the aforementioned people, I'd also extend the invitation to Angus, Andrew and Ernie to step up for the good of one of the boys and the business as a whole. And more importantly the boys, more than the promoters, to step up and get together and do something they can really be proud of. Anybody who knows Darren, knows he's the first guy who would be volunteering for this cause if he was the healthy one, and one of you got hurt badly in the ring, so I'm very much encouraging the boys to step up, outside of political lines that we constantly find the business affected by, and do something right.

Darren, my thoughts and prayers are with you, and I know your passion for the business won't let this injury get you down. I can't wait until you're back in the ring.

Mike I am still shaken and saddened by what happened to Darren last night and wish him a quick and safe recovery as well.
As for the show I am 100% with you on this and will lend any and all support for it.

I'm relieved to say that I just spoke to Zack, and he's alright, and my report of long-term injury was inaccurate. He believes he'll be good as new in a month to 6 weeks.

He was laughing and in great spirits. Typical Darren.

Only Davidson would use this to bring himself back in and put himself over with the boys. It is nothing more than Davidson self serving his interests. How many rib phone calls you make last nite Davidson?

I'm glad Merc is ok. I think the most fun I've had in the last year was just recently when Yourself, Duggan, Sanchez, Mentalo, Merc and I went to Huston's here in brandon after the SPW souris show.

Merc will come back better than ever, that much we all know.

I wish him all the best

To the comment left at 10:08am, Zack knows I was genuinely concerned, and that's all that matters. There was no personal objective or agenda.

I think the bitter post left should have signed his name as "Victim". I've been the target of a late night phone call or two from Mike and it was as harmless as it was funny. Boy you "victims" are whiners, I'm not associated even loosely with wrestling, and thank goodness, some of you come across as complete losers, and associating with you would be depressing. Consider this, you make no money, you draw less to your shows than an old folks home draws for bingo, and in the grander scheme of things nobody cares about you guys unless you are on TV. But boy, for all of that, wrestling in a little hall, you guys sure think you are special. I'm not fooled, I see you for what you are. I dated a guy who played rec-league hockey every monday night in the winter, did he walk around taking himself as seriously as a pro playing in the NHL? No, he would never get laid if he did. So wake up and smell the coffee you dorks.

I know Mike to be very genuine, and if he went to the trouble of writing a blog about this wrestler's injury, and it wasn't even his event, it tells me he honestly cares, and respects the injured party.

So many people are bitter towards Mike, and Mike laughs at you for it. So then you attack him for not caring that your stomach is all in knots? You folks need to chill out, you will never get an honest rise out of Mike, I've known him for a year, and an honest angry reaction will never come to the forefront if he doesn't respect you or for that matter like you.

So make your comments, I'm pretty sure I know Mike well enough to know he laughs that you go to so much trouble to let it stress your lives out.

And to the loser that threw a punch a month or so ago. You couldn't knock a guy down with a sucker punch while he was on stairs and offering a handshake, just a tip, but you might want to get out of the punch throwing business, you've failed miserably, but guess what, Mike laughed pretty hard at that too.

None of you people would make it in a real city, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary or Vancouver, you'd all get eaten alive.

Irene owned you wrestlers, LOL.

More to the point, I hope Zack Mercury is ok. I've only been to two shows, one in 2001, and the other in 2008, and I thought both times Zack was good at what he did.

Good luck, speedy recovery. Your injury will heel far faster than most of the bruised egos from losers getting late night prank phone calls. LOL

ummm

saying that becuase the wrestlers have a passion and love what they are doing makes them losers? and because they aren't drawing more crowds it makes them not good enough...i'm sorry i didn't realize you were the girl who decided who was good enough for what!

i have also known Mike for quite some time and well i do agree he can be a good time and i feel that he does care about the injury and no one can dispute that
HOWEVER to say he just sits there and doesn't react when someone eggs him on is crazzzzzzzzzy

as far the adam knight thing...i beg to differ that hes not a stand up guy becuase he really is a guinely good guy!

you might feel the need to write me back and that's fine

i'm Charlene :)

have a great day!

Hi Charlene.

Adam Knight? This is the guy that threw the punch at Mike a month ago? I have a very strong opinion on this.

First, "Genuine Good Guy"?!? Not in this situation. From what I've been told accurately happened. Mr. Good Guy Adam threw a punch at Mike. Mike was walking up stairs into a nightclub, and had his hand extended for a handshake. That's a sucker punch. And it's not gentlemanly. And quite frankly it's severely immature. You can be friends with Adam Knight, and can appreciate his good qualities, all of which I don't know exist, because I don't know him, but in this situation he's wrong. Plain and simple, he's an asshole and he's 100% wrong in this situation.

And I don't follow wrestling, at all, let alone in your town. But I can say the wrestlers themselves take themselves far more seriously than any of the fanbase. If you call less than 100 people an honest fanbase. The local bingo caller is probably more of a celebrity than the average wrestler in your town. He entertains more people and gives cash prizes every single night. Sorry if my point of view offends you. But if I was doing something for little or no money, for a small fan base, and it was affecting my life enough to make anonymous comments, and throw punches, I'd feel like a loser and look for a new activity to fill my time.

And like you have your opinion, and I take no offense from it, I hope you'll respect my opinion and take no offense. I assure you, none was intended.

Mike Davidson said...

My original blog was about Zack Mercury, and his injury.

I don't think it needs to be about Adam Knight's punch, or me.

Irene didn't say Adam Knight wasn't a good guy, she said he needed a different path, as throwing punches really wasn't working for him.

Anonymous said...

i will say this...

there was a reason for the punch it's not like Mike walked into the bar and for no reason at all there was a punch thrown because of hurtful things done to people...

as for the "draws of wrestling" if i was a wrestler i wouldn't care if i wrestled in front of 10 people or 1000 people what would matter to me is entertaining the crowd no matter what the situation was...

i don't take offense to pretty much anything...and i respect your opinion and what you are saying but you can't listen to one side of a story and form a conclusion without hearing the other side right?

takes two to tango

IDV said...

I had a fairly long discussion with Mike about this thread this afternoon, and I only have one more point.

You say it takes two to tango. OK. And you say Mike did things to have it coming. And that pretty much was limited to a couple of 3am phone calls where he said rude things. Sticks and stones... He was blamed for this Rokeby Rib, something he openly admitted was terribly funny, but something he later was cleared of any wrong doing for, another wrestler came out and admitted to doing it.

Regardless of what the provocation was, two adults don't act like this. The story, which can be confirmed, Mike saw Adam, walked up and offered a handshake. Adam threw a punch.

There is only one person wrong. Not the guy offering a handshake, but the guy who threw the punch. End of story.

Mike was bothered that the thread about an injured wrestler degenerated into this, and he's right.

Good to hear that the injured wrestler is ok.

Mike enjoys working the marks and it seems he has found one in IDV or maybe this is his new rat. All you are to Mike is a mark rat. Get over it already.

hey, wont say much cause of the one-handed thing but just a mssg to Mike to thank him once again for his kind support. Fortunately, barring anything unforseen, this is a straight up 4-finger dislocation that was reset, but at the time post-show in Selkirk hospital there was lots of talk about nerve damage and surgery because my fingers and wrist were so locked up and deformed. The doctor in Selkirk flat-out refused to work on it (I could overhear her from the room even in my
morphined-up state) I posted a more detailed account on my Facebook for the gory details, lol. So Mike, I truly appreciate yours and others concern about my health, it really makes a person feel better and I believe speeds recovery. Before, during, and after reading it, there would never be a doubt in my mind that it isn't genuine (it actually makes me kinda laugh{cry a bit at the same time, lol} reading that some small people would think that it wasn't) So, (maybe at the dismay of any of mine or Mike's or wrestling in general's detractors)there is no question I will be back
as soon as I possibly can (I just gotta see what happens with this thing for a bit) cause I don't see an injury doing something you want to do as a detriment just a setback to move forward from...Thanks for your time

Sorry to be a bitch but the "boys" tend to be ALL talk in this city, look at when people were suppose to do a show for Derksen to raise money for Cancer, shit never happened, hopefully my reality check will change that and give the kick in the ass that will get shit done for merc, he's a nice guy and I have no problems with him and hope he has a speedy recovery, nobody as nice as him deserves to be in pain!!

"He was blamed for this Rokeby Rib, something he openly admitted was terribly funny, but something he later was cleared of any wrong doing for, another wrestler came out and admitted to doing it."

I know this post is about Mercury, but I couldn't let this slide by. When and where was this big revelation? Who took responsibility? For someone who claims to not know anything about wrestling, not be from this city, and not know any of the people involved, you seem to have a lot of information. I AM from this city, know a bit about the wrestling community, and know all these people and as far I have heard, it's still unknown as to who did this, but all signs point to Mike. I may have missed something, but I'm curious as to where you got your info. From Mike? I think most people in this city have at least one story of being lied to by Mike Davidson, so unless you have any proof, from the info I've seen it was Mike pulled the rib and I'm disappointed Knight didn't hit him harder.

Anonymous said...

According to an interview with Andrew Davidson told Andrew Duggan did the rib. How do you feel about that Duggan?

With the Mercury injury all Davidson is using it for is a way back into favor with the boys or at least trying. Davidson will never change he will just work you to think he. You have been worked Mercury.

Mike Davidson said...

I'm sure this interview with Andrew was a major press scrum, covered by all the major media in the world, lol.

I have never said it was Danny and for that matter don't believe it was Danny. I also don't believe it was Chris Raine either, but regardless of what I believe, I know 100% it was not me.

I am also not using the Mercury injury. I was and continue to be genuinely concerned for Zack, and everything I said in my blog was true.

I'm happy to hear that Zack will be appearing at the Steeltown Pro Wrestling Show this Saturday night at the Concious Centre. You can't keep a good man down. Or in Adam Knight's case, You Can't Take a Good Man Down. LOL had to throw that one in there.

Benefit show? For what? He hurt his hand doing something he shouldn't do. We have free health care so what are we going to do raise money to buy him some new gear?

IDV said...

Paranoid? I'm in Montreal, and am a Media Professional. Not in Winnipeg, and don't know much about wrestling, except what I read in Mike's blogs and ask Mike about.

I wonder how many of these anonymous posts are made by this Andrew guy? Of course that would be in between his hectic interview schedule. He probably has done more interviews this week then Barrack and McCain combined, and of course I am laughing my ass off as I type this.

No I'm not a "rat" or a "mark" to terms that Mike politely defined for me. I am a really good friend of Mike's and respect him without limits, and that probably pisses this anonymous Jack(off) off to no end.

Sorry can't live up to your high regard of me.

Mike Davidson said...

At the time I wrote the blog, it was prior to hearing an update on his health, and I feared he would be unable to work or earn a living for several months while healing from surgery.

People can post their opinions about my supposed motivations, and suggest I was insincere, but I wasn't.

The person most important in this situation is Merc and he knows I was 100% sincere. So opinions are like assholes, and I don't really like assholes.

Great blog Mike. There is a lot of losers who post anonymously. They probably are the same type of losers who jerk off to online gay porn.

Look, I didn't insult you, I didn't call you a rat or a mark or paranoid. I merely asked, and you don't have to answer if you don't have one, maybe Mike can answer, who was it that supposedly confessed and admitted to being the Rokeby ribber? You say Mike was cleared of wrong doing because of someone else confessing, who was it and when and where was this confession offered?

Mike Davidson said...

My word, Zack Mercury, Irene, and the Rokeby Ribber are hot topics, my blog has never gotten this much play.

Irene was referencing something that I told her about that I first read on Declaration of Independents where Chris Raine confessed to the rib. I don't believe it to be true at this point, just another attempt for the ribber to frame someone else. Much the same way I got framed.

But I'm not going to be approving any more comments on this blog. My next one will be a gooder too.
